Thoughtful travel
We went on a short trip to the Harz in Germany. My wife and I that is. As school kids we have been there a few times and always liked it very much. It has been about 3 decades we have not been there and we wanted see how it is today. Firstly the Harz region is still very beautiful. But we were a bit devastated how the first looked liked. Many trees were sick and dead. And many of the small town which relied on tourism were empty. Whole communities falling apart.
It was very sad to see how many places looked like. On building collapsed onto the street. Maybe the dull winter weather enhanced the feeling of desperation and depression. But none the less there were people who could make a living and that is now gone. And again the Harz region is one of the most beautiful I have seen. Wonderful nature and so many paths to hike and bike, so many things to do.
On the other hand cities like Quedlinburg are beautifully restored and worth not only one visit.
In our times we should be more aware of what is right on our doorsteps. It has not always to be the “BIG” adventure in far away countries. There is so much beauty around us, we just have to open our eyes for it and not take everything for granted we have right in front of us.
